Understanding the struggles of ex-offenders

More than 650,000 people are released from incarceration every year. Unfortunately, the first question many face before even exiting the door from prison to freedom is, “Where am I going to live?”

Very few offenders have a loving family waiting for them to come home. Some, family members may have moved away, died, or made it clear the returning offender is not welcome. Sometimes there are legal reasons the ex-offender cannot go home.

Many newly-released ex-offenders end up in homeless shelters. While these shelters are far better than sleeping outdoors, the number of beds are often limited and available only at night. During the day, shelter residents are forced onto the streets carrying their few belongings with them.

President Obama has called America a nation of second chances, and many of our fellow citizens are hoping for such an opportunity.

Necessary resources and a stable place to live is essential to a successful reentry.
